While it’s been some time since my last entry, I certainly have not been without words and photos. I’ve decided to resurrect this webpage for many reasons but the biggest is probably the creative outlet it provides. This space will mainly be dedicated to experiences of places, seeing + doing of the city and at sea. The last few years has been about new discoveries and adventures. I’ve been able to check off a few things on my “bucket list” and I want to share those experiences with all of you. First stop: Lisbon, Portugal.
Lisbon reminds me a lot of San Francisco. The hills, the water, and the bridge. As a matter of fact, the company that built the 25 de Abril Bridge in Lisbon, built a bridge in SF, just not the Golden Gate. It was the SF-Oakland Bay Bridge.
We arrived on a Wednesday evening in early April. The weather was lovely and crowds were minimal. The best time to visit is March – May or September – October. We stayed in the heart of Lisbon at Chiado44. This is an older building with no lift so beware. We had two rooms as there were 3 of us total and their triple room was already booked. We had a room on the 3rd and 4th floor.
The views were amazing from the 4th floor but walking up multiple flights at the end of a long day of miles of walking was a kill joy. Don’t get me wrong, I would book it again, just need to mentally plan for it. I figure it balances out all the delicious foods we consumed.
Speaking of delicious foods.
There is no shortage of such a thing….
One of the best cities I’ve eaten seafood in.
Aside from eating as a pastime, the city is also walkable (albeit very hilly) for sightseeing. My advice is walk through neighborhoods but take a taxi from one end of the city to the other. (I’m usually a fan of public transport but for the 3 of us in one taxi, it was incredibly reasonable and convenient). One of my favorite jaunts was in the old neighborhood of Alfama.
Although all of Lisbon is a photographers playground, Alfama was especially of interest.
We of course made it to a few attractions as well.
We stayed a total of 2 days and 3 nights. Knowing what I know now, I would plan for a longer stay. Below are links to all the places we ate and sites we visited.
